Italy beat England to become European champion for the second time

For the second time in history, the Italian national soccer team won the European Championship, beating the national team of England in the final of the tournament.

In the final of the UEFA European Soccer Championship, Italy defeated England on penalties at Wembley Stadium in London.

The main time ended in a draw – 1: 1. The scoring was opened by the British in the second minute. Luke Shaw at the far post closed the pass from Kieran Trippier on the right flank.

In the middle of the second half of the meeting, the Italians restored the score difference. Distinguished by Leonardo Bonucci, who finished off the ball in the 67th minute, which bounced off the post after hitting Marco Verratti.

Extra time also did not reveal a winner. In the penalty shootout, the Italians were more accurate (3: 2), who scored from the point of Domenico Berardi, Leonardo Bonucci and Federico Bernardeschi.

For the British, Harry Kane and Harry Maguire realized their attempts, and Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka missed.

Thus, the Italians reached the final of the European Championship for the fourth time and won the gold medals of the tournament for the second time. They had previously won the Euro in 1968.

Recall that the Italians defeated Turkey (3: 0) and Switzerland (3: 0) in the group stage, and then outplayed Wales (1: 0) and from the first place of the “A” quartet advanced to the playoffs, where they outplayed on the way to the final Austria (2: 1), Belgium (2: 1) and Spain (1: 1, 4: 2 – on penalties).

The British in the group beat Croatia (1: 0) and the Czech Republic (1: 0), and also drew with Scotland (0: 0). In the 1/8 finals, Gareth Southgate’s charges were stronger than Germany (2: 0), in the quarterfinals – Ukraine (4: 0), and in the semifinals – Denmark (2: 1).
