L.A. County Sheriff’s detective suffers medical emergency, dies while driving in Carson area

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detective died after suffering a medical emergency while driving in the Carson area late Sunday, officials said.

The crash was reported just after 10 p.m. near the intersection of West Carson Street and Vermont Avenue.

The deputy suffered some type of medical emergency while heading east on West Carson Street and was involved in a “single vehicle traffic collision,” sheriff’s officials said in a news release.

No other vehicles or motorists were involved.

The deputy was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

He was identified as Special Victim Bureau Detective Steven J. Lim, a 26-year-veteran of the department, Sheriff Robert Luna said.

“He was an exemplary detective who handled the most severe child abuse cases,” Luna explained in a tweet, adding that Lim was heading home from work when the incident occurred.

Lim leaves behind a wife, five children, his parents and a sister.

Video from the scene showed a silver SUV with front-end damage and at least one flat tire.

No additional details have been released.

The cause of death was unclear.

He was fully vaccinated and boosted.
